In recent years, several car manufacturers have faced allegations of violating emissions laws by using defeat devices in their diesel vehicles. These devices were engineered to manipulate emissions tests, falsely indicating the vehicles produced lower emissions than they actually do. In reality, these vehicles markedly exceeded any legal limits. As a result, diesel cars and vans emitted more harmful nitrogen oxide pollution than advertised, misleading customers and adversely affecting air-quality.
